Hello. It’s YMBJ. Your friendly neighborhood Black hasher.
Apparently February 26 is Black Lives Matter Day. I didn’t know that either. Wild that we need a calendar reminder for something that should be baseline human decency, but here we are.
I figured we could do what we do best: move our bodies through the city with intention.
This Thursday’s trail starts around Congo Square inside Louis Armstrong Park, one of the only places in early America where enslaved Africans were allowed to gather, drum, trade, and preserve culture. From there we’ll run through Tremé, the oldest continuously Black neighborhood in the United States. Maybe we’ll hit Claiborne, once an oak-lined Black business corridor before the interstate carved through it in the 60s.
Yes, I actually thought about this trail. Yes, I still only have three brain cells left after Mardi Gras and Guatemala. Both things can be true.
It won’t be preachy. It won’t be heavy. It’s just movement, community, and a little awareness about the ground under our feet.
If you don’t come, that’s fine. Doesn’t mean you’re racist. I’ll assume you’re at home thinking deeply about all of the black people in your life.
On-on.
