First used in the 1890s, Juneteenth is a portmanteau of the words “June” and “nineteenth” referring that date in 1865 when Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War. Now an annual federal holiday, we will mark Juneteenth on trail this week by visiting some of New Orleans most iconic historic & cultural sites in the Bayou Road/Treme neighborhoods (more info on their history below).
“Bayou Road was formed over 300 years ago as a pathway to bridge the gap between Bayou St. John and the Mississippi River, where trade took place, & laid the groundwork for where New Orleans would later be founded. Today, it’s a hub for Black-owned businesses spanning the neighborhoods of Esplanade Ridge and Tremé.”
“Founded in the 1810s, Tremé is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, and was initially the main neighborhood of its free people of color. Historically a racially mixed neighborhood, it remains an important center of the city’s African-American and Créole culture, especially the modern brass band tradition. Some sources go so far as to call it the oldest black-majority neighborhood in the U.S.”
